Mary Ann Bevan
Mary Ann Bevan (December 20, 1874 – December 26, 1933), AKA "The Ugliest Woman in the World," was known for being one of the worst looking women. When Mary died, she weighed 168 lbs and was 5 feet 7 inches tall.
Biography[]
Mary Ann Webster was born in London, England, as one of 8 children in 1874. While she worked as a nurse, she married a greengrocer named Thomas Bevan in 1903, thus getting the full name of Mary Ann Bevans.
When Mary was wed at age 32, she was an incredibly beautiful young woman. Sadly, the symptoms of Acromegaly started shortly after marriage. The disease not only caused abnormal growths, but also headaches, muscle and joint pain, along with failing eyesight. Acromegaly turned the once beautiful nurse, at least on the surface, homely.
The painful disease didn't stop her dream of having a family. She ended up having 4 children with Thomas. When Thomas died suddenly in 1914 she was left alone to raise her four children and soon after she lost her job and only income.
Wishing to find means for her family of 5, she entered an "Ugly Woman" contest, and won. She was then hired as a sideshow performer by Sam Gumpertz in 1920s. There she provides well for her children. She worked at Coney Island Dreamland Show, and Ringling Bro's. The job left her with immeasurable pains inside and out. Her sideshow career continued until her tragic death on December 26. 1933.
